Answer: Option D — 1227
Detailed Solution
Genghis Khan (Chinggis Khan), the founder of the Mongol empire, died in August 1227, during a campaign against the Western Xia (Tangut) kingdom in north-western China.
About Genghis Khan:
- His original name was Temujin; he was born around 1162.
- He united the Mongol tribes, and in 1206 an assembly of Mongol chiefs (the kurultai) proclaimed him "Genghis Khan", which means "universal ruler".
- He built one of the largest land empires in history, which after his death expanded to stretch from China to eastern Europe.
- He was a brilliant military leader, using fast cavalry, mounted archers, discipline, and intelligence networks.
His campaigns:
- He conquered northern China (the Jin empire), Central Asia, and the Khwarizmian empire (in present-day Iran, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan).
- The Mongol armies destroyed many cities, such as Bukhara, Samarkand, Merv and Nishapur.
Genghis Khan and India:
- In 1221, the Mongols pursued Jalaluddin Mangbarni, the prince of Khwarizm, up to the Indus.
- Jalaluddin sought shelter from Iltutmish, the Sultan of Delhi.
- Iltutmish wisely refused, to avoid provoking the Mongols, and so Delhi was saved from a Mongol invasion at that time.
- The Mongol threat continued under later Sultans, such as Balban and Alauddin Khalji, who strengthened the north-western frontier.
After Genghis Khan:
- His empire was divided among his sons and grandsons.
- His grandson Kublai Khan founded the Yuan dynasty in China (and was visited by Marco Polo).
- His grandson Hulagu Khan destroyed Baghdad in 1258, ending the Abbasid Caliphate.
- The Mughal emperor Babur was a descendant of Genghis Khan through his mother, and of Timur through his father.
His legacy:
- He is regarded as the founding father of Mongolia.
- The Mongol empire made trade along the Silk Route safer, a period sometimes called the "Pax Mongolica".
Why not the other options?
- ✗1206 was when he was proclaimed Genghis Khan.
- ✗1221 was when the Mongols reached the Indus.
- ✗1258 was when Baghdad was destroyed.
Quick tip
Remember: Genghis Khan (Temujin) = proclaimed in 1206, died in 1227; reached the Indus in 1221 (Iltutmish refused shelter to Jalaluddin Mangbarni); Hulagu sacked Baghdad (1258).
