Answer: Option A — 1919
Detailed Solution
The Treaty of Versailles, which formally ended the First World War between Germany and the Allied Powers, was signed on 28 June 1919.
About the treaty:
- It was signed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles, near Paris.
- The date was exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary at Sarajevo (28 June 1914), which had triggered the war.
- It was the main treaty produced by the Paris Peace Conference of 1919.
- The main leaders at the conference (the "Big Four") were Woodrow Wilson (USA), David Lloyd George (Britain), Georges Clemenceau (France) and Vittorio Orlando (Italy).
Terms imposed on Germany:
- The "war guilt clause" (Article 231) held Germany responsible for the war.
- Germany had to pay heavy reparations (war damages).
- Germany lost territories, such as Alsace-Lorraine (to France), and all its overseas colonies.
- The German army was limited to 1,00,000 men, and Germany was not allowed to have an air force or submarines.
- The Rhineland was demilitarised.
Results:
- Many Germans regarded the treaty as harsh and humiliating (a "diktat").
- Resentment against it helped the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, and contributed to the Second World War.
The League of Nations:
- The treaty included the Covenant of the League of Nations, an international organisation for maintaining peace, proposed by Woodrow Wilson (his "Fourteen Points").
- India was a founding member of the League of Nations and signed the Treaty of Versailles (through British-appointed representatives).
The First World War:
- It was fought from 1914 to 1918.
- The armistice (ceasefire) was signed on 11 November 1918.
- More than one million Indian soldiers served overseas in the war.
- The harsh Treaty of Sevres with Turkey led to the Khilafat movement in India.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1914 was the year the war began.
- ✗1918 was the year of the armistice.
- ✗1920 was the year of the Treaty of Sevres.
Quick tip
Remember: Treaty of Versailles = 28 June 1919 (ended WWI with Germany; war guilt clause; League of Nations); armistice = 11 November 1918; Treaty of Sevres (1920) = Turkey (Khilafat movement).
