Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — 1915

Detailed Solution

The All-India Hindu Mahasabha was founded in 1915, at a session held at Hardwar during the Kumbh Mela.

Background:

  • In the early 20th century, several provincial Hindu Sabhas were formed, especially in Punjab (the Punjab Hindu Sabha, 1909), to protect the interests of Hindus.
  • The founding of the Muslim League (1906) and the introduction of separate electorates for Muslims (1909) encouraged the formation of Hindu organisations.

About the Hindu Mahasabha:

  • The provincial Hindu Sabhas were brought together into an all-India organisation, the Sarvadeshak Hindu Sabha, in 1915, which was later renamed the All-India Hindu Mahasabha.
  • Its first session at Hardwar was presided over by the Maharaja of Kasimbazar, Manindra Chandra Nandy.
  • Its leaders included Madan Mohan Malaviya, Lala Lajpat Rai and Swami Shraddhanand.

Its aims:

  • To protect and promote the interests of Hindus.
  • To work for the unity of Hindus, the removal of untouchability, and social reform.
  • To encourage the "Shuddhi" (reconversion) and "Sangathan" (organisation) of Hindus.

In the 1920s and 1930s:

  • After the communal riots of the 1920s, the Hindu Mahasabha became more active.
  • D. Savarkar became its President in 1937, and remained so until 1943; under him, the Mahasabha promoted the idea of "Hindutva".
  • Shyama Prasad Mookerjee was another leading figure.

Its role in the freedom struggle:

  • The Hindu Mahasabha did not take part in the Quit India Movement.
  • It opposed the partition of India and the demand for Pakistan.

After Independence:

  • After the assassination of Gandhi in 1948, the Mahasabha lost support.
  • It continued as a small political party.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1906 was the year the Muslim League was founded.
  • ✗1925 and 1937 were the years of other events.

Quick tip

Remember: All-India Hindu Mahasabha = 1915 (Hardwar, Kumbh Mela; Maharaja of Kasimbazar presided); Savarkar President 1937-43.
