Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 1967

Detailed Solution

The Naxalite movement takes its name from the peasant uprising that began at Naxalbari, a village in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, in May 1967.

The Naxalbari uprising:

  • It began when landless peasants and tribal sharecroppers, supported by a radical group of communists, tried to seize land from landlords.
  • On 24 May 1967, a police inspector was killed in a clash with the peasants.
  • On 25 May 1967, police fired on a crowd at Prasadjote, near Naxalbari, killing eleven people, including women and children.
  • The uprising was suppressed within a few months, but its ideas spread.

Leaders:

  • Charu Majumdar was the chief ideologue of the movement; he called for armed struggle based on the ideas of Mao Zedong.
  • Kanu Sanyal and Jangal Santhal were the main organisers of the peasants at Naxalbari.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist):

  • The radicals broke away from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which was then part of the United Front government of West Bengal.
  • They formed the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), or CPI(ML), in 1969, with Charu Majumdar as its leader.

Spread of the movement:

  • The movement spread to Srikakulam (Andhra Pradesh), Bihar, Odisha, Kerala and parts of Calcutta, where many students joined it.
  • It used the strategy of "annihilation of class enemies".
  • The government launched strong police action in the early 1970s, and Charu Majumdar died in police custody.

Today:

  • The term "Naxalite" is now used for various Maoist groups in India.
  • The Communist Party of India (Maoist) was later formed by a merger of some of these groups.
  • The areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism are sometimes called the "Red Corridor".

NCERT on the movement:

NCERT notes that the Naxalite movement began as a peasant uprising in 1967 in the Naxalbari police station area of Darjeeling district, under the leadership of the local cadres of the CPI(M).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1965, 1971 and 1977 are not the year in which the Naxalbari uprising began.

Quick tip

Remember: Naxalbari uprising = May 1967 (Darjeeling, West Bengal); leaders Charu Majumdar, Kanu Sanyal, Jangal Santhal; CPI(ML) formed in 1969.
