Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — 1908

Detailed Solution

On 30 April 1908, Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki threw a bomb at a carriage in Muzaffarpur (Bihar), believing it to be carrying the magistrate Douglas Kingsford.

Background:

  • Douglas Kingsford had been the Chief Presidency Magistrate in Calcutta.
  • He was hated by the nationalists for giving harsh sentences to young nationalists and for ordering the flogging of a young boy, Sushil Sen, for taking part in a protest.
  • The revolutionaries of Bengal decided to kill him.
  • To protect him, the government transferred him to Muzaffarpur as a district judge.

The attack:

  • Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki, two young revolutionaries, followed him to Muzaffarpur.
  • On the evening of 30 April 1908, they threw a bomb at a carriage leaving the European Club, thinking that Kingsford was in it.
  • But the carriage was carrying two British women, Mrs Kennedy and her daughter, the wife and daughter of a barrister, Pringle Kennedy, who were killed.
  • Kingsford escaped.

After the attack:

  • Prafulla Chaki shot himself to avoid arrest, at Mokama.
  • Khudiram Bose was arrested at Waini (Pusa) railway station, now named Khudiram Bose Pusa station.
  • He was tried and sentenced to death.

Khudiram Bose:

  • He was only 18 years old when he was hanged.
  • He became a hero and martyr for the people of Bengal; songs were composed in his memory.

Results:

  • The incident led to police raids on the revolutionary centres in Calcutta, and to a famous conspiracy case.
  • It also led to the passing of new laws against explosives and the press.
  • Tilak wrote articles in "Kesari" defending the revolutionaries' motives, for which he was tried for sedition and imprisoned in Mandalay.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1897, 1912 and 1919 were the years of other events.

Quick tip

Remember: Muzaffarpur bomb (30 April 1908) = Khudiram Bose and Prafulla Chaki, aimed at Kingsford; killed Mrs and Miss Kennedy; Prafulla Chaki shot himself.
