Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 1920

Detailed Solution

East Bengal Club was founded on 1 August 1920 in Kolkata (then Calcutta). It is one of the most popular and successful football clubs in India.

How the club was founded:

The club was formed after a dispute in the Coochbehar Cup. Jorabagan Club dropped one of its players, Sailesh Bose, who came from East Bengal (the eastern part of Bengal, now in Bangladesh).

In protest, Suresh Chandra Chaudhuri, a vice-president of Jorabagan, left and, along with Raja Manmatha Nath Chaudhuri and others, founded a new club to represent people with roots in East Bengal.

The club's identity is closely linked to the community of East Bengali (Bangal) migrants who settled in Kolkata, especially after the Partition of 1947.

Key facts about East Bengal Club:

  • Colours: red and gold.
  • Symbol: a flaming torch (mashaal).
  • Its supporters traditionally celebrate with hilsa (ilish) fish, while Mohun Bagan supporters celebrate with prawns (chingri).

Its fierce rivalry with Mohun Bagan is called the Kolkata Derby (or "Boro Match"), one of the biggest football rivalries in Asia. Matches are played before huge crowds at the Salt Lake Stadium (Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan).

It won the ASEAN Club Championship in 2003, the first Indian club to win a major international trophy.

It has won the Federation Cup, the IFA Shield, the Durand Cup and the National Football League several times.

It joined the Indian Super League (ISL) in 2020 and is now called East Bengal FC.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1889 is the year Mohun Bagan was founded.
  • ✗1893 is the year the Indian Football Association (IFA) was formed.
  • ✗1937 is the year the All India Football Federation (AIFF) was formed.

Quick tip

Remember: East Bengal Club = founded 1 August 1920, Kolkata (red and gold, torch symbol); Mohun Bagan = 1889; Kolkata Derby; AIFF = 1937.
