Answer: Option D — 1925
Detailed Solution
The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was formed on 7 November 1925 at Gwalior. It was set up to organise hockey at the national level and to select and send Indian teams to international events.
Role and history of the IHF:
- Soon after its formation, the IHF became a member of the international federation (FIH) and sent India's first hockey team to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, where India won the gold medal.
- In 1926, the IHF sent an Indian army team on a tour of New Zealand, where it won almost all its matches; Dhyan Chand was part of this team.
- Under the IHF, India dominated world hockey, winning Olympic gold in 1928, 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1964 and 1980, and the World Cup in 1975.
- Women's hockey in India was run by a separate body, the Indian Women's Hockey Federation (IWHF).
Replacement by Hockey India:
In 2008, the Indian Olympic Association suspended the IHF after a corruption scandal involving one of its officials.
A new body, Hockey India, was formed in 2009 and recognised by the FIH as the national governing body for both men's and women's hockey. The IHF and IWHF were effectively replaced.
Hockey India is headquartered in New Delhi.
Hockey timeline:
- 1886: Hockey Association formed in England.
- 1908: Hockey first played at the Olympics (London).
- 1924: FIH (Fédération Internationale de Hockey) founded in Paris.
- 1925: Indian Hockey Federation formed.
- 1928: India's first Olympic hockey gold.
- 1971: First Hockey World Cup (Barcelona).
Why not the other options?
- ✗1924 is the year the FIH (international federation) was founded in Paris.
- ✗1928 is the year of India's first Olympic hockey gold.
- ✗1948 is the year of India's first Olympic gold after independence.
Quick tip
Remember: Indian Hockey Federation = 1925 (Gwalior), replaced by Hockey India in 2009; FIH = 1924 (Paris); first Olympic gold = 1928.
