Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Punjab

Detailed Solution

"Gatka" is a traditional martial art associated with the Sikhs of Punjab.

About Gatka:

It is a form of combat training that uses wooden sticks, swords, shields and other weapons.

In practice, the main weapons are the "soti" (a wooden stick) and the "farri" (a small shield made of leather or wood). The stick represents the sword.

Other traditional weapons include the "kirpan" (sword), "khanda" (double-edged sword), "barchha" (spear), "chakram" (a throwing ring) and "lathi".

It combines physical fitness, self-defence and spiritual discipline.

Its movements and techniques are based on footwork, circles and coordination, performed to the beat of drums.

History:

Gatka is associated with the Sikh Gurus who encouraged the Sikhs to be warriors ("sant-sipahi": saint-soldiers) to defend themselves and others.

Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, introduced the concept of "Miri-Piri" (temporal and spiritual authority) and began military training of his followers in the 17th century. He wore two swords to symbolise this.

Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru, founded the Khalsa in 1699 at Anandpur Sahib and encouraged martial training.

The festival of "Hola Mohalla" at Anandpur Sahib, started by Guru Gobind Singh, features displays of Gatka and other martial skills by the Nihang Sikhs.

Today, Gatka is performed during religious processions ("Nagar Kirtans"), festivals and competitions.

Recognition:

  • Gatka was included in the Khelo India Youth Games in 2021 (along with Kalaripayattu, Thang-Ta and Mallakhamb).
  • The Gatka Federation of India governs it as a sport.

Other martial arts of India:

  • Thang-Ta: Manipur.
  • Silambam: Tamil Nadu (staff fighting).
  • Mardani Khel: Maharashtra.
  • Paika Akhada: Odisha.
  • Lathi Khela: West Bengal.
  • Kuttu Varisai: Tamil Nadu (unarmed combat).

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kerala is known for Kalaripayattu.
  • ✗Manipur is known for Thang-Ta.
  • ✗Tamil Nadu is known for Silambam.

Quick tip

Remember: Gatka = Punjab (Sikh martial art with soti and farri; linked to Guru Hargobind's Miri-Piri and Guru Gobind Singh; displayed at Hola Mohalla; Khelo India 2021); Kalaripayattu = Kerala; Thang-Ta = Manipur.
