Answer View answer ā–¾

Answer: Option B — Montreal, Canada

Detailed Solution

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has its headquarters in Montreal, Canada.

About WADA:

  • It was established on 10 November 1999 in Lausanne, Switzerland, at the initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
  • It moved its headquarters to Montreal in 2002.
  • It is an independent international agency, funded equally by the Olympic Movement and the governments of the world.
  • Its aim is to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight against doping (the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs and methods) in sport.

Its main activities:

It developed and maintains the "World Anti-Doping Code", which harmonises anti-doping rules across all sports and countries. The Code was first adopted in 2003 and came into force in 2004; it has been revised several times.

It publishes the annual "Prohibited List" of banned substances and methods.

It accredits laboratories that test athletes' samples.

It monitors national and international anti-doping organisations for compliance with the Code.

In 2019, WADA banned Russia from major international sporting events for four years (later reduced to two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport), because of state-sponsored doping and tampering with data.

The UNESCO "International Convention against Doping in Sport" (2005) allows governments to align their national laws with the World Anti-Doping Code.

Anti-doping in India:

  • National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA): set up in 2005 and registered as a society on 24 November 2005; headquarters New Delhi.
  • National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL): New Delhi.
  • The National Anti-Doping Act, 2022 gave NADA statutory status.

Other sports organisations and their headquarters:

  • International Olympic Committee (IOC): Lausanne, Switzerland.
  • Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS): Lausanne.
  • FIFA: Zurich, Switzerland.
  • World Athletics: Monaco.
  • International Cricket Council (ICC): Dubai, UAE.
  • International Hockey Federation (FIH): Lausanne.

Why not the other options?

  • āœ—Lausanne has the IOC and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
  • āœ—Geneva has the WTO and WHO.
  • āœ—Monaco has World Athletics.
