Answer: Option B — New Delhi
Detailed Solution
The National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) is located at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium complex in New Delhi.
About the NDTL:
- It is an autonomous body under the Department of Sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.
- It is India's main laboratory for testing the urine and blood samples of athletes for banned substances (dope testing).
It received accreditation from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in 2008. This allowed it to test samples from international events held in India, such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
It is one of the few WADA-accredited laboratories in Asia.
In August 2019, WADA suspended its accreditation because it did not meet international standards. After improvements, the suspension was lifted in December 2021.
It tests samples collected by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) and by other national and international organisations.
It also does research on new methods of detecting doping, and on "nutritional supplements" that may contain banned substances.
Under the National Anti-Doping Act, 2022, the NDTL was given statutory status as the "National Dope Testing Laboratory", along with other dope testing laboratories.
About doping:
- Doping is the use of prohibited substances or methods by athletes to improve their performance unfairly.
- Common banned substances include anabolic steroids, stimulants, hormones (such as erythropoietin, EPO), diuretics and some drugs.
- Athletes found guilty of doping can be banned from competition and lose their medals.
About NADA:
- The National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) was set up in 2005, with its headquarters in New Delhi.
- It is responsible for carrying out anti-doping programmes in India, in line with the World Anti-Doping Code.
- It collects samples from athletes, conducts hearings and imposes sanctions.
Other sports institutions:
- Sports Authority of India (SAI): New Delhi (1984).
- Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NIS): Patiala (1961).
- Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE): Gwalior (1957).
- National Sports University: Imphal (2018).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Patiala has the National Institute of Sports.
- ✗Bengaluru has a SAI training centre.
- ✗Kolkata has a SAI regional centre.
Quick tip
Remember: National Dope Testing Laboratory = New Delhi (JLN Stadium; WADA accredited 2008; suspended 2019, restored 2021; statutory under the National Anti-Doping Act 2022); NADA = 2005, New Delhi; WADA = Montreal.
