Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Deuce

Detailed Solution

In tennis, when both players (or both teams in doubles) have won three points each in a game, so that the score is 40-40, the score is called "deuce".

How scoring works in a tennis game:

  • 0 points: "love".
  • 1 point: "15".
  • 2 points: "30".
  • 3 points: "40".
  • The fourth point wins the game, as long as the player is at least two points ahead.

What happens after deuce:

  • From deuce, a player must win two consecutive points to win the game.
  • The player who wins the next point after deuce gets the "advantage" (called "advantage in" if the server wins it, and "advantage out" if the receiver wins it).

If the player with the advantage wins the next point, he or she wins the game. If the other player wins it, the score returns to deuce.

Some events, such as doubles in some professional tournaments, use "no-ad scoring", in which the next point after deuce decides the game.

Sets and matches:

  • A set is won by the first player to win six games with a margin of at least two games (for example, 6-4 or 7-5).
  • At 6-6 a tie-break is usually played, in which the first player to reach 7 points with a two-point lead wins the set.
  • Men's Grand Slam singles matches are best of five sets; women's are best of three.

Other tennis terms:

  • Ace: a serve that the receiver cannot touch.
  • Let: a serve that touches the net but lands in the correct service box; it is replayed.
  • Double fault: two faulty serves in a row, losing the point.
  • Grand Slam: winning all four major tournaments (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) in one calendar year.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Love means a score of zero.
  • ✗Advantage is the score after a player wins the first point following deuce.
  • ✗Let is a serve that touches the net and lands in; it is replayed.

Quick tip

Remember: Tennis scores = love (0), 15, 30, 40; 40-40 = deuce; next point = advantage; two consecutive points after deuce win the game.
