The term 'castling' is associated with which game?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Chess

Detailed Solution

Castling is a special move in chess involving the king and one of the rooks. It is the only move in chess in which a player moves two pieces at the same time.

How castling works:

  • The king moves two squares towards a rook on the same rank (row).
  • The rook then jumps over the king and is placed on the square next to it, on the other side.
  • Kingside castling (short castling, written "O-O") uses the rook on the h-file.
  • Queenside castling (long castling, written "O-O-O") uses the rook on the a-file.

Conditions for castling:

  • Neither the king nor the rook involved has moved earlier in the game.
  • There must be no pieces between the king and the rook.
  • The king must not be in check at that moment.
  • The king must not pass through or land on a square that is attacked by an enemy piece.
  • Purpose: castling helps to move the king to a safer position, usually behind a wall of pawns, and brings the rook towards the centre where it is more active.

Other chess terms:

✓ Check

A direct attack on the king. Checkmate: the king is in check and cannot escape, ending the game.

Stalemate: the player to move has no legal moves but is not in check; the game is a draw.

En passant: a special pawn capture.

Promotion: a pawn reaching the last rank becomes a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

Gambit: an opening in which material is sacrificed for an advantage.

Zugzwang: a position in which any move worsens one's position.

About chess in India:

Chess originated in India as "Chaturanga" around the 6th century CE. Viswanathan Anand became India's first Grandmaster in 1988, and D. Gukesh became the youngest undisputed world champion in December 2024.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Carrom uses terms such as striker, queen and cover.
  • ✗Bridge uses terms such as trump, grand slam and rubber.
  • ✗Golf uses terms such as birdie, eagle and bogey.

Quick tip

Remember: Castling = chess, king moves two squares and rook jumps over (O-O kingside, O-O-O queenside); only move where two pieces move together.
