Answer: Option A — 1951 and 1982
Detailed Solution
India has hosted the Asian Games twice, both times in New Delhi.
1951 Asian Games (the first Asian Games):
They were held in New Delhi from 4 to 11 March 1951.
The idea of the Asian Games was proposed by G. D. Sondhi, an Indian member of the International Olympic Committee, and supported by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The Asian Games Federation was formed in 1949 in New Delhi.
About 489 athletes from 11 countries took part in 57 events across six sports.
The main venue was the National Stadium (now the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium).
Japan topped the medal table, and India finished second, with 15 gold medals.
India won the gold medal in football, beating Iran 1-0 in the final.
The motto of the Games, "Ever Onward", was given by Nehru.
1982 Asian Games (the ninth Asian Games):
- They were held in New Delhi from 19 November to 4 December 1982.
- The mascot was "Appu", a baby elephant, the first mascot of the Asian Games.
- Doordarshan started colour television broadcasting in India to telecast the Games.
- New venues such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and the Talkatora Swimming Pool were built.
- India won 13 gold medals and finished fifth.
About the Asian Games:
- They are held every four years and are organised by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), headquartered in Kuwait.
- They are also called the "Asiad".
- China has topped the medal table at every Games since 1982.
- At the 2022 Asian Games, held in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, India won a record 107 medals (28 gold) and finished fourth.
- The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1974 Asian Games were held in Tehran, Iran.
- ✗1962 Asian Games were held in Jakarta, Indonesia, where India won football gold.
- ✗2010 is when India hosted the Commonwealth Games, not the Asian Games; the 2010 Asian Games were in Guangzhou, China.
Quick tip
Remember: India hosted the Asian Games = 1951 (first Asiad, New Delhi) and 1982 (New Delhi, mascot Appu, colour TV began); OCA HQ = Kuwait; 2023 Hangzhou = India's record 107 medals.
