'Jallikattu', the traditional bull-taming sport, is associated with which state?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Tamil Nadu

Detailed Solution

Jallikattu is a traditional bull-taming sport of Tamil Nadu. It is usually held during the harvest festival of Pongal in January, especially on Mattu Pongal, the day dedicated to cattle.

How Jallikattu is played:

  • A bull is released from an enclosure (called "vadivasal") into a crowd of young men.
  • The participants try to grab and hold on to the bull's hump for a certain distance or time, or to remove a bundle of coins or cloth tied to its horns, to win prizes.
  • Unlike Spanish bullfighting, the bull is not supposed to be killed or injured.
  • The bulls used are native breeds, such as Kangeyam, Pulikulam and Umbalachery, and are specially reared for the sport.
  • The name comes from "salli" (coins) and "kattu" (a package or tied bundle), referring to the coins tied to the bull's horns.
  • The most famous Jallikattu events are held at Alanganallur, Palamedu and Avaniyapuram, near Madurai.

It is an ancient sport. It is mentioned in Sangam literature as "Eru Thazhuvuthal" (embracing the bull), and a seal from the Indus Valley Civilisation is said to show a similar scene.

Legal history:

Animal rights groups argued that the sport was cruel to bulls and dangerous for people.

In 2014, the Supreme Court banned Jallikattu in the Animal Welfare Board of India vs A. Nagaraja case.

In January 2017, huge peaceful protests were held across Tamil Nadu, especially at the Marina Beach in Chennai, demanding that the ban be lifted.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly then passed an amendment to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, to allow Jallikattu with safety rules.

In May 2023, a five-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court upheld the laws of Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka allowing Jallikattu, bullock-cart races and Kambala, calling them part of cultural heritage.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Karnataka is known for Kambala (buffalo racing in paddy fields).
  • ✗Kerala is known for snake boat races.
  • ✗Andhra Pradesh is known for cockfights during Sankranti.

Quick tip

Remember: Jallikattu = Tamil Nadu bull-taming sport at Pongal (Alanganallur, Madurai); SC ban 2014, TN law 2017, upheld 2023; Kambala = Karnataka buffalo race.
