The terms 'Let', 'Stroke' and 'No Let' are used in the rules of which game?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Squash

Detailed Solution

In squash, "let", "stroke" and "no let" are decisions given by the referee when one player's movement or shot is interfered with by the other player. Because both players share the same court and hit the ball against the same front wall, interference is common, and these rules decide what happens.

The three decisions:

Let: the rally is replayed, and no point is awarded. It is given when there was some interference, but the player could not have reached the ball anyway or the interference was minimal, or when the opponent made every effort to avoid interference.

Stroke: the point is awarded to the player who was obstructed. It is given when the opponent did not make every effort to clear the way and the player would have hit a winning shot, or when the player would have hit the opponent with the ball.

No let: the rally is not replayed, and the point goes to the opponent. It is given when there was no real interference, or when the player could not have reached the ball, or accepted the interference and played on.

About squash:

  • It is played by two players (or four in doubles) in a four-walled court with a small, hollow rubber ball and a racket.
  • It originated at the Harrow School in England in the 19th century, as a development of the game "rackets".
  • Matches are usually best of five games, with each game played to 11 points using point-a-rally scoring (PAR-11).
  • The world governing body is the World Squash Federation (WSF), and the professional tour is run by the Professional Squash Association (PSA).
  • Squash will be included in the Olympic Games for the first time at Los Angeles 2028.
  • Indian squash stars include Saurav Ghosal (the first Indian man in the world top 10), Dipika Pallikal Karthik and Joshna Chinnappa.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Badminton terms include "shuttlecock", "smash", "drop" and "let" (but not "stroke" and "no let" as decisions).
  • ✗Table tennis terms include "rally" and "let".
  • ✗Volleyball terms include "spike", "libero" and "block".

Quick tip

Remember: Let, stroke, no let = Squash (referee's decisions on interference); squash will debut at the LA 2028 Olympics; Saurav Ghosal = first Indian man in the top 10.
