Answer: Option A — Rally
Detailed Solution
In table tennis, a "rally" is the period during which the ball is in play. It begins with the service and ends when a point is scored, for example when a player fails to make a good return or commits a fault. The term is also used in other racket games such as tennis, badminton and squash.
Other important terms in table tennis:
Let: a rally in which no point is scored and which is replayed. For example, if the ball touches the net on a service but lands correctly on the other side, it is a let and the service is taken again.
Deuce: when the score reaches 10-10 in a game. After deuce, a player must win by two clear points (such as 12-10).
Service: the stroke that starts each rally. The ball must be tossed at least 16 cm up from an open palm and hit so that it bounces once on the server's side and once on the receiver's side.
Rules and equipment:
A game is won by the first player to reach 11 points with a lead of at least 2 points. A match is usually best of five or seven games.
Each player serves two points in turn, and after deuce, service alternates after every point.
The table is 2.74 m long, 1.525 m wide and 76 cm high.
The net is 15.25 cm high.
The ball is 40 mm in diameter, made of plastic (since 2014; earlier celluloid), and weighs 2.7 grams.
History:
Table tennis originated in England in the late 19th century as an after-dinner game among the upper classes, using books as a net and a golf ball. It was also called "ping-pong" and "whiff-whaff".
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), now "World Table Tennis", was founded in 1926.
It became an Olympic sport at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
China is the dominant country in the sport.
Indian table tennis stars include Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra and G. Sathiyan.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Let is a rally that is replayed without a point.
- ✗Deuce is the score of 10-10.
- ✗Volley is a term from tennis for hitting the ball before it bounces; it is not allowed in table tennis.
Quick tip
Remember: Table tennis: rally = ball in play; game = 11 points; table = 2.74 m x 1.525 m, 76 cm high; net = 15.25 cm; ball = 40 mm; Olympic sport since 1988.
