Answer: Option A — 1975
Detailed Solution
The first men's Cricket World Cup was held in England in June 1975. It was officially called the "Prudential Cup", after its sponsor, Prudential Assurance Company.
About the 1975 World Cup:
- Eight teams took part: England, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and East Africa.
- Matches were 60 overs per side, played with a red ball and white clothing.
The final was played at Lord's, London, on 21 June 1975. The West Indies, captained by Clive Lloyd, defeated Australia by 17 runs. Clive Lloyd scored a century (102) in the final.
India, captained by S. Venkataraghavan, won only one match, against East Africa. In India's first match, against England, Sunil Gavaskar scored a famous 36 not out in 60 overs.
History of the World Cup:
- The West Indies also won the second World Cup (1979).
- India won the third World Cup in 1983, at Lord's, under Kapil Dev, defeating the West Indies.
In 1987, the World Cup was held outside England for the first time, in India and Pakistan, and matches were reduced to 50 overs per side. Australia won.
The 1992 World Cup (Australia and New Zealand) introduced coloured clothing, the white ball and floodlit matches.
India won its second World Cup in 2011, at home, under M. S. Dhoni.
Australia has won the World Cup the most times (six times), most recently in 2023, when it beat India in the final at Ahmedabad.
The next World Cup, in 2027, will be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The Women's World Cup actually started earlier, in 1973 in England. The ICC T20 World Cup began in 2007 in South Africa, and India won the first edition under Dhoni.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1971 is when the first One Day International (ODI) was played, between Australia and England at Melbourne.
- ✗1983 is when India won its first World Cup.
- ✗1987 is when the World Cup was first held outside England.
Quick tip
Remember: First men's Cricket World Cup = 1975, England (Prudential Cup, 60 overs), won by West Indies (Clive Lloyd); first ODI = 1971; India's titles = 1983 and 2011.
