Which country won the first FIFA World Cup in 1930?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Uruguay

Detailed Solution

The first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay in July 1930. In the final, played on 30 July 1930 at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, Uruguay defeated its neighbour Argentina 4-2 to become the first world champions.

Why Uruguay hosted the first World Cup:

  • Uruguay had won the Olympic football gold medals in 1924 and 1928, so it was the leading football nation of the time.
  • 1930 was the 100th anniversary of Uruguay's first constitution, and the country offered to pay the travel costs of visiting teams and build a new stadium (the Centenario).

About the 1930 tournament:

Only 13 teams took part: seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America. Many European teams did not travel because of the long sea voyage.

The idea of the tournament came from Jules Rimet, the French president of FIFA. The original trophy was named the "Jules Rimet Trophy". Brazil kept it permanently after winning its third title in 1970; it was stolen in 1983 and never recovered.

The first goal in World Cup history was scored by Lucien Laurent of France.

World Cup facts:

  • FIFA was founded in Paris in 1904; its headquarters is in Zurich, Switzerland.
  • Brazil has won the most titles (five: 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002).
  • Germany and Italy have won four titles each, and Argentina three (1978, 1986 and 2022).
  • The 2026 World Cup was hosted jointly by the USA, Canada and Mexico, and was the first with 48 teams.
  • India qualified for the 1950 World Cup but did not take part.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Argentina lost the 1930 final to Uruguay.
  • ✗Brazil has won the most World Cups but first won in 1958.
  • ✗Italy won the second and third World Cups (1934 and 1938).

Quick tip

Remember: First FIFA World Cup = 1930, Uruguay (host and winner, beat Argentina 4-2 in Montevideo); most titles = Brazil (5); FIFA HQ = Zurich; 2026 = USA, Canada and Mexico (48 teams).
