Answer: Option B — Kathmandu

Detailed Solution

The first South Asian Federation Games (SAF Games) were held in Kathmandu, Nepal, in September 1984. Seven countries took part: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan and Maldives. India topped the medal table.

About the South Asian Games:

  • They were renamed the "South Asian Games" in 2004.
  • They are organised by the South Asia Olympic Council (SAOC).

They are a regional multi-sport event for the countries of South Asia. Afghanistan joined later (2004), making eight member nations, the same as the SAARC countries.

They were meant to be held every two years, but they have often been delayed.

India has topped the medal table in almost every edition.

India has hosted the Games three times: Calcutta (1987), Chennai (1995) and Guwahati-Shillong (2016). The 2016 Games were the 12th edition.

The 13th South Asian Games were held in Kathmandu and Pokhara (Nepal) in 2019.

Related multi-sport events:

  • Asian Games: for all of Asia, first held in New Delhi (1951).
  • Commonwealth Games: first held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.
  • Afro-Asian Games: held in Hyderabad, India, in 2003.
  • About SAARC: The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation was set up on 8 December 1985 in Dhaka, with its secretariat in Kathmandu.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Dhaka hosted the South Asian Games in 1985, 1993 and 2010.
  • ✗Islamabad hosted them in 1989 and 2004.
  • ✗New Delhi has not hosted them; India hosted them in Calcutta, Chennai and Guwahati-Shillong.

Quick tip

Remember: First SAF Games = Kathmandu, 1984 (seven nations); renamed South Asian Games in 2004; India hosted in 1987 (Calcutta), 1995 (Chennai) and 2016 (Guwahati-Shillong).
