Answer: Option B — 1946

Detailed Solution

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI), the national governing body for athletics (track and field) in India, was formed in 1946. It was originally called the Amateur Athletic Federation of India; the name was changed to the Athletics Federation of India in 2006.

About the AFI:

  • Its headquarters is in New Delhi.
  • It is affiliated with World Athletics (formerly the IAAF) and the Asian Athletics Association, and is recognised by the Indian Olympic Association and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
  • It organises national championships, selects Indian teams for international events such as the Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, and runs national camps.
  • It conducts the National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships and the Indian Grand Prix series.

Notable Indian athletics achievements:

  • Norman Pritchard won two silver medals in the 200 m and 200 m hurdles at the 1900 Paris Olympics, representing India.
  • Milkha Singh ("Flying Sikh") finished fourth in the 400 m at the 1960 Rome Olympics.
  • T. Usha ("Payyoli Express") finished fourth in the 400 m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics; she later became the first woman President of the Indian Olympic Association (2022).
  • Anju Bobby George won India's first World Championships medal (bronze, long jump, 2003).

Neeraj Chopra won India's first Olympic gold in athletics (javelin, Tokyo 2020), silver at Paris 2024, and India's first World Championships gold (2023). 7 August, the day of his Tokyo win, is celebrated as National Javelin Day by the AFI.

Related bodies:

  • Indian Olympic Association: formed in 1927.
  • Sports Authority of India (SAI): set up in 1984.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1927 is when the Indian Olympic Association was formed.
  • ✗1951 is the year of the first Asian Games (New Delhi).
  • ✗1961 is when the Arjuna Award was started.

Quick tip

Remember: Athletics Federation of India = 1946 (HQ New Delhi), affiliated to World Athletics; 7 August = National Javelin Day (Neeraj Chopra's Tokyo gold); IOA = 1927.
