Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option B — 2010
Detailed Solution
India hosted the 19th Commonwealth Games in New Delhi from 3 to 14 October 2010. This is the only time India has hosted the Commonwealth Games, and it was the largest multi-sport event held in India.
Key facts about the 2010 Games:
- The main venue was the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, which hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and the athletics events.
- The mascot was "Shera", a tiger.
The theme song "Jiyo Utho Badho Jeeto" was composed by A. R. Rahman.
About 71 countries and territories and over 6,000 athletes took part.
India won 101 medals (38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze) and finished second in the medal table, behind Australia. This remains India's best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Indian stars included the shooters Gagan Narang (four gold medals) and Abhinav Bindra, the badminton player Saina Nehwal (gold in women's singles), the wrestler Sushil Kumar, and Krishna Poonia, who won gold in women's discus throw, India's first athletics gold at the Games in over 50 years.
The Games were also marked by controversy over delays in preparation, poor infrastructure and corruption allegations against the organising committee.
Other major multi-sport events hosted by India:
Asian Games: 1951 (New Delhi, the first Asian Games) and 1982 (New Delhi). Doordarshan began colour TV broadcasts in 1982 with the Asian Games.
South Asian Games: several times, including 2016 (Guwahati and Shillong).
Commonwealth Youth Games: 2008 (Pune).
Afro-Asian Games: 2003 (Hyderabad).
In November 2025, Ahmedabad was chosen to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the centenary edition, so India will host the Games for a second time; India is also preparing a bid for the 2036 Olympics.
Why not the other options?
- ✗2006 Commonwealth Games were held in Melbourne, Australia.
- ✗1982 is when India hosted the Asian Games, not the Commonwealth Games.
- ✗2014 Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, Scotland.
Quick tip
Remember: India hosted the Commonwealth Games once = 2010, New Delhi (19th edition, mascot Shera, 101 medals, 2nd place); Asian Games in India = 1951 and 1982.
