Answer: Option A — Mohammed Salim
Detailed Solution
Mohammed Salim (1904-1980), a footballer from Calcutta (Kolkata), became the first player from the Indian subcontinent to play for a European football club when he played for Celtic Football Club of Glasgow, Scotland, in 1936.
His story:
He played as a winger for the Mohammedan Sporting Club of Calcutta, which won the Calcutta Football League five times in a row (1934-1938), becoming the first Indian club to do so.
In 1936, he travelled to Scotland with the help of his cousin, Hasheem, who lived there. He was given a trial by Celtic and impressed everyone with his skill.
Remarkably, he played barefoot, with only bandages on his feet, as many Indian footballers did at the time.
He played a few matches for Celtic, including friendlies, and scored goals. Celtic offered him a contract, but he became homesick and returned to India.
He was known as the "Indian juggler" for his ball control.
Other pioneers of Indian football:
- Sailen Manna: captain of the Indian team at the 1952 Olympics; known as the "gentleman footballer"; named among Asia's top ten captains by the English Football Association in 1953.
- Chuni Goswami: captain of the Indian team that won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games (Jakarta); also played first-class cricket.
Bhaichung Bhutia: the "Sikkimese Sniper"; became the first Indian to play professionally in England, for Bury FC (1999). He was the first Indian footballer to play 100 international matches.
Sunil Chhetri: India's highest goal scorer in international football.
India's golden era in football was in the 1950s and early 1960s, when it won Asian Games gold medals in 1951 and 1962 and reached the semi-final of the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, under coach Syed Abdul Rahim.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Sailen Manna captained India at the 1952 Olympics.
- ✗Chuni Goswami captained India to the 1962 Asian Games gold.
