Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1930

Detailed Solution

The first Commonwealth Games were held in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, from 16 to 23 August 1930. At that time, they were called the "British Empire Games".

About the 1930 Games:

  • About 400 athletes from 11 countries took part.
  • There were six sports: athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rowing, swimming and diving, and wrestling.
  • England topped the medal table.
  • Only men competed in most sports; women took part only in swimming events.

The Games have changed names several times:

  • British Empire Games: 1930-1950.
  • British Empire and Commonwealth Games: 1954-1966.
  • British Commonwealth Games: 1970-1974.
  • Commonwealth Games: since 1978.

Facts about the Commonwealth Games:

  • They are held every four years and are organised by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), whose headquarters is in London.
  • Their motto is "Humanity, Equality, Destiny".
  • Australia has topped the overall medal table most often.
  • India first took part in 1934 (London).

India hosted the Games once, in 2010 (New Delhi), the 19th edition. India won 101 medals (38 gold) and finished second, its best performance.

The Queen's Baton Relay (now the King's Baton Relay) is held before each Games.

Shooting and wrestling are among India's strongest sports in the Games.

The 2022 Games were held in Birmingham, England. The 2026 Games are scheduled for Glasgow, Scotland, with a reduced list of sports.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1934 is when India first took part in the Games (London).
  • ✗1911 is the year of the "Festival of Empire" sports in London, sometimes seen as a forerunner.
  • ✗1950 is when the Games were held in Auckland, New Zealand.

Quick tip

Remember: First Commonwealth Games = 1930, Hamilton (Canada), as "British Empire Games"; India's debut = 1934; India hosted = 2010 (Delhi, 101 medals); 2026 = Glasgow.
