Answer: Option B — Gwalior
Detailed Solution
The Captain Roop Singh Stadium is a cricket stadium in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. It was originally built as a hockey ground and was later converted into a cricket stadium. It hosted its first One-Day International (ODI) in 1988.
The stadium's most famous moment:
On 24 February 2010, Sachin Tendulkar scored 200 not out against South Africa at this stadium. It was the first double century ever scored by a man in an ODI, making the stadium a landmark in cricket history.
The stadium has floodlights and has hosted several ODIs as well as domestic matches. Since 2024, Gwalior's new Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium has also been used for international matches.
Who was Captain Roop Singh?
Roop Singh (1908-1977) was one of India's greatest hockey players. He was the younger brother of Major Dhyan Chand.
He won Olympic gold medals with the Indian hockey team in 1932 (Los Angeles) and 1936 (Berlin).
At the 1932 Olympics, India beat the USA 24-1, and Roop Singh scored 10 goals in that match, one of the highest scores by an individual in an Olympic hockey match.
He was known for his powerful and accurate shots.
In his honour, a street in Munich, Germany, was named "Roop-Singh-Weg" during the 1972 Munich Olympics.
Other stadiums named after hockey players:
- Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi.
- Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium (Lucknow) and others.
- Other famous stadiums of Madhya Pradesh include the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore and the Tatya Tope Stadium in Bhopal.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Indore has the Holkar Cricket Stadium.
- ✗Lucknow has the Ekana (Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee) Cricket Stadium.
- ✗Jhansi is linked with Dhyan Chand, who grew up there, but the Roop Singh Stadium is in Gwalior.
Quick tip
Remember: Captain Roop Singh Stadium = Gwalior; site of Sachin's first ODI double century (200*, 2010); Roop Singh = Dhyan Chand's brother, Olympic gold 1932 and 1936.
