Answer: Option A — New Delhi

Detailed Solution

The Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range is located at Tughlakabad in New Delhi. It is one of India's main shooting venues and is managed by the Sports Authority of India (SAI).

About the shooting range:

  • It was built for the 9th Asian Games held in New Delhi in 1982.
  • It was upgraded for the 2010 Commonwealth Games and hosted all the shooting events (rifle, pistol and shotgun).
  • It has also hosted ISSF World Cup events and is used for national training camps.

Who was Dr. Karni Singh?

Dr. Karni Singh (1924-1988) was the last Maharaja of Bikaner (Rajasthan) and a famous shooter.

He represented India in shooting (trap and skeet) at five Olympic Games, from 1960 to 1980.

He was the first shooter to receive the Arjuna Award, in 1961, the first year of the award.

He was also a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) from Bikaner for several terms.

His daughter, Rajyashree Kumari, was also a shooter and received the Arjuna Award.

Other shooting ranges and centres in India:

  • P. State Shooting Academy, Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh).
  • Gun for Glory academies and other private ranges.
  • Balewadi Shooting Range, Pune (Maharashtra).

Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range is the venue for many national championships organised by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).

Indian shooting achievements:

  • Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore: Olympic silver, double trap (2004).
  • Abhinav Bindra: Olympic gold, 10 m air rifle (2008).
  • Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar: Olympic medals (2012).
  • Manu Bhaker, Sarabjot Singh and Swapnil Kusale: Olympic bronze medals (2024).

Why not the other options?

Bikaner was the princely state of Dr. Karni Singh, but the range named after him is in Delhi.

Bhopal has the M. P. State Shooting Academy.

Pune has the shooting range at the Balewadi Sports Complex.

Quick tip

Remember: Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range = Tughlakabad, New Delhi (1982 Asian Games, 2010 CWG); Karni Singh = Maharaja of Bikaner, 5-time Olympian, first shooting Arjuna awardee (1961).
