Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Perth

Detailed Solution

The WACA Ground, owned by the Western Australian Cricket Association, is located in Perth, Western Australia. It has been the home of cricket in Western Australia since the 1890s.

Key facts about the WACA Ground:

It hosted its first Test match in December 1970 (Australia vs England).

It became famous for having one of the fastest and bounciest pitches in the world, which suited fast bowlers. The pitch is also helped by the "Fremantle Doctor", a cool sea breeze that blows in the afternoon.

Many memorable fast bowling performances and fast centuries have taken place here.

In 2018, international cricket in Perth largely moved to the new Perth Stadium (Optus Stadium), which has a much larger capacity (about 60,000). The WACA continues to host domestic cricket and some matches.

India at the WACA:

India's famous Test win at Perth in January 2008, under Anil Kumble, ended Australia's run of 16 consecutive Test wins. Ishant Sharma's spell to Ricky Ponting was memorable.

At the new Perth Stadium, India won the first Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series under Jasprit Bumrah.

Major Australian cricket grounds:

  • Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG): the largest in Australia; hosts the Boxing Day Test; site of the first Test match (1877).
  • Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG): hosts the New Year Test; known for spin-friendly pitches.
  • Adelaide Oval: hosted the first day-night Test match (2015).
  • The Gabba, Brisbane: usually hosts the first Test of the summer; India won there in January 2021.
  • Bellerive Oval: Hobart, Tasmania.

Famous grounds elsewhere:

  • Lord's (London): "Home of Cricket".
  • Eden Gardens (Kolkata).
  • Kingsmead (Durban), Newlands (Cape Town) and the Wanderers (Johannesburg) in South Africa.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Adelaide has the Adelaide Oval.
  • ✗Brisbane has the Gabba.
  • ✗Hobart has the Bellerive Oval.

Quick tip

Remember: WACA = Perth (fast, bouncy pitch, "Fremantle Doctor" breeze); MCG = Melbourne (Boxing Day Test); SCG = Sydney; Gabba = Brisbane; Adelaide Oval = first day-night Test (2015).
