Detailed Solution

The first Thomas Cup competition was held in 1948-49, with the final stage played in March 1949 at Preston, England. Malaya (now Malaysia) won the first title, beating Denmark in the final.

About the Thomas Cup:

It is the world team championship for men's badminton, organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

It is named after Sir George Alan Thomas, a leading English badminton player and administrator who proposed the competition and donated the trophy. He was also the first president of the International Badminton Federation (now BWF).

It was originally held every three years. Since 1984, it has been held every two years, together with the Uber Cup for women.

Each tie consists of five matches: three singles and two doubles.

Indonesia is the most successful nation, with 14 titles, followed by China.

India and the Thomas Cup:

India reached the semi-finals (bronze) in 1952, 1955 and 1979.

India won the Thomas Cup for the first time in May 2022 at Bangkok, Thailand. It defeated 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 in the final.

The winning team included Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, H. S. Prannoy and the doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty.

The Government of India announced a reward of ₹1 crore for the team.
