The terms 'snatch' and 'clean and jerk' are used in which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option C — Weightlifting

Detailed Solution

In Olympic weightlifting, athletes compete in two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. The best successful attempt in each lift is added together to give the athlete's total, and the highest total wins.

The two lifts:

Snatch: the barbell is lifted from the floor to above the head in one continuous movement, with a wide grip.

Clean and jerk: a two-part lift. In the "clean", the lifter pulls the barbell from the floor to the front of the shoulders. In the "jerk", the lifter drives the barbell from the shoulders to above the head with the arms locked, usually by splitting the legs.

Each lifter gets three attempts at each lift.

A lift is judged valid by three referees, using white lights for "good lift" and red lights for "no lift".

Weightlifting at the Olympics:

  • It was part of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and has been held at almost every Games since 1920.
  • Women's weightlifting was introduced at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
  • The international governing body is the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), founded in 1905.

India's Olympic weightlifting medals:

Karnam Malleswari won bronze in the 69 kg category at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She was the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won silver in the 49 kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021). It was India's first medal of those Games.

Other Indian weightlifters include Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli and Sanket Sargar, who won medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Wrestling uses terms such as "takedown", "pin" (fall), "freestyle" and "Greco-Roman".
  • ✗Gymnastics uses terms such as "vault", "floor exercise", "pommel horse" and "rings".
  • ✗Powerlifting uses the squat, bench press and deadlift, not the snatch or clean and jerk.

Quick tip

Remember: Weightlifting = snatch + clean and jerk (3 attempts each); Powerlifting = squat, bench press, deadlift; Karnam Malleswari (2000 bronze), Mirabai Chanu (2020 silver).
