Answer: Option A — 2007
Detailed Solution
The first ICC World Twenty20 was held in South Africa from 11 to 24 September 2007. Twelve teams took part.
India's victory in 2007:
India, led by a young captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, won the tournament. Senior players such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly did not take part.
In the final at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, on 24 September 2007, India defeated Pakistan by 5 runs.
Gautam Gambhir top-scored for India in the final with 75 runs.
In the last over, bowled by Joginder Sharma, Pakistan's Misbah-ul-Haq tried a scoop shot and was caught by S. Sreesanth at short fine leg, giving India the title.
Irfan Pathan was Man of the Match in the final, and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi was Player of the Tournament.
During the tournament, Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes in an over off England's Stuart Broad at Durban and scored a 12-ball fifty, the fastest in T20 Internationals at the time.
India also beat Pakistan in a "bowl-out" after a tied group match.
Impact:
India's win greatly increased the popularity of T20 cricket and led directly to the launch of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008.
Later T20 World Cup winners:
2009: Pakistan. 2010: England. 2012: West Indies. 2014: Sri Lanka. 2016: West Indies (India hosted). 2021: Australia. 2022: England. 2024: India, under Rohit Sharma, beating South Africa in the final in Barbados.
The tournament was renamed the "ICC Men's T20 World Cup" in 2018. The 2026 edition is hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
Why not the other options?
- ✗2005 is the year of the first men's T20 International (Australia vs New Zealand).
- ✗2009 was the second World T20, held in England and won by Pakistan.
- ✗2010 was the third, held in the West Indies and won by England.
Quick tip
Remember: First T20 World Cup = 2007, South Africa; India won under Dhoni (beat Pakistan by 5 runs, Johannesburg); India's second title = 2024 under Rohit Sharma.
