Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — 1889

Detailed Solution

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club was founded on 15 August 1889 in Kolkata (then Calcutta). It is one of the oldest football clubs in Asia. It was formed at the house of Kirti Mitra in the Mohun Bagan Villa area of north Calcutta, and the first president was Bhupendra Nath Basu.

The historic 1911 IFA Shield victory:

On 29 July 1911, Mohun Bagan defeated the East Yorkshire Regiment, a British army team, 2-1 in the final of the IFA Shield.

It was the first time an Indian team had won a major tournament against a British team. Most of the Mohun Bagan players famously played barefoot.

Coming soon after the Partition of Bengal (1905), the win was seen as a symbol of national pride and of the freedom struggle. 29 July is celebrated as "Mohun Bagan Day".

Later history:

  • The club's colours are green and maroon, and it is nicknamed "The Mariners" because its emblem is a sailing boat.
  • Mohun Bagan's great rivalry with East Bengal (founded in 1920) is known as the "Kolkata Derby", one of the biggest football rivalries in Asia.

In 2020, Mohun Bagan merged with ATK (Atletico de Kolkata) to form ATK Mohun Bagan, and the club was renamed Mohun Bagan Super Giant in 2023. It plays in the Indian Super League (ISL).

In 1989, on its centenary, the Government of India issued a postage stamp in honour of the club, and it was given the title "National Club of India".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗1920 is the year East Bengal Club was founded.
  • ✗1893 is the year the Indian Football Association (IFA) was formed in Calcutta.
  • ✗1911 is the year Mohun Bagan won the IFA Shield.

Quick tip

Remember: Mohun Bagan = founded 15 August 1889, Kolkata; won 1911 IFA Shield barefoot against East Yorkshire Regiment; East Bengal = 1920; IFA = 1893.
