Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Krishnamachari Srikkanth

Detailed Solution

In the final of the 1983 Prudential World Cup, played at Lord's, London, on 25 June 1983, India's opening batsman Krishnamachari Srikkanth was the top scorer of the match with 38 runs off 57 balls, including 7 fours and a six.

The 1983 final in brief:

India batted first and were bowled out for just 183 runs in 54.4 overs (it was a 60-over match). Apart from Srikkanth's 38, Sandeep Patil scored 27 and Mohinder Amarnath 26.

West Indies, the two-time defending champions led by Clive Lloyd, were expected to win easily. But the Indian bowlers bowled them out for 140, giving India victory by 43 runs.

Madan Lal took the important wicket of Viv Richards (33), with captain Kapil Dev taking a famous running catch.

Mohinder Amarnath took 3 wickets for 12 runs and was named Man of the Match in both the semi-final and the final.

Balwinder Sandhu bowled Gordon Greenidge with an in-swinging delivery early in the innings.

Significance:

This was India's first World Cup title. It transformed cricket in India, making it the country's most popular sport and helping India become a major power in world cricket. The victory is the subject of the 2021 film "83".

Earlier in the tournament, Kapil Dev scored an unbeaten 175 against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells after India were 17 for 5, one of the greatest ODI innings.

India won its second ODI World Cup in 2011 under M. S. Dhoni.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Kapil Dev was the captain; he scored 15 in the final.
  • ✗Mohinder Amarnath scored 26 and was Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
  • ✗Sunil Gavaskar scored only 2 runs in the final.

Quick tip

Remember: 1983 WC final (Lord's, 25 June) = India 183, West Indies 140; top scorer Srikkanth (38); Man of the Match Mohinder Amarnath; captain Kapil Dev.
