The Sudirman Cup is associated with which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option B — Badminton

Detailed Solution

The Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team championship in badminton, organised by the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Key facts about the Sudirman Cup:

  • It was first held in 1989 in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Indonesia won the first title.
  • It is named after Dick Sudirman, an Indonesian badminton administrator who founded the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) and served as its head for many years.
  • It is held every two years (in odd-numbered years).

Each tie between two countries consists of five matches: men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Because teams need strong men and women players, it tests the overall strength of a country's badminton.

China is by far the most successful country, with more than ten titles. South Korea and Indonesia have also won it.

India has taken part regularly but has not yet won a medal; its best results have been quarter-final appearances.

Major badminton team championships:

Thomas Cup: men's world team championship (since 1948-49), named after Sir George Alan Thomas. India won it for the first time in 2022.

Uber Cup: women's world team championship (since 1956-57), named after Betty Uber.

Sudirman Cup: mixed team championship (since 1989).

Other badminton trophies and tournaments:

  • All England Open Championships (since 1899), the oldest badminton tournament.
  • Syed Modi International: an Indian badminton tournament held in Lucknow.
  • BWF World Championships: individual championships since 1977.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Table tennis team events include the Swaythling Cup (men) and the Corbillon Cup (women).
  • ✗Tennis team events include the Davis Cup (men), the Billie Jean King Cup (women) and the Hopman Cup (mixed).
  • ✗Squash events include the British Open and the World Squash Championships.

Quick tip

Remember: Sudirman Cup = badminton mixed team (1989, Jakarta); Thomas Cup = men; Uber Cup = women; Swaythling = table tennis (men); Davis Cup = tennis (men).
