The term 'Run Batted In' (RBI) is used in which sport?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — Baseball

Detailed Solution

"Run Batted In" (RBI, often pronounced "ribbie") is a statistic in baseball (and softball). A batter is credited with an RBI when his action at bat allows a run to be scored.

How RBIs are credited:

A batter earns an RBI when a team-mate on base scores because of his hit, a sacrifice fly or a sacrifice bunt, a fielder's choice, or when he is walked or hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

If the batter hits a home run, he earns an RBI for himself as well as for every runner on base. So a "grand slam" (a home run with the bases loaded) gives four RBIs.

A batter does not get an RBI if the run scores because of a fielding error or a ground-ball double play.

The RBI is one of the three main batting statistics, along with batting average and home runs. A player who leads the league in all three in one season wins the "Triple Crown".

Other baseball terms:

  • Pitcher: the player who throws the ball to the batter.
  • Catcher: the player behind home plate who catches pitches.
  • Strike: a pitch the batter misses or does not swing at when it is in the strike zone; three strikes make an "out" (a strikeout).
  • Ball: a pitch outside the strike zone that the batter does not swing at; four balls give the batter a "walk" to first base.
  • Home run: a hit that allows the batter to go round all the bases and score.
  • Bunt: a softly tapped hit.
  • Inning: a division of the game in which each team bats once; a game has nine innings.
  • Diamond: the infield with its four bases.

Baseball is the national pastime of the USA. Its top professional league is Major League Baseball (MLB), and the annual championship is the "World Series".

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Cricket uses terms such as "runs", "wickets", "LBW" and "maiden over", but not RBI.
  • ✗Rugby uses terms such as "try", "scrum" and "conversion".
  • ✗Basketball uses terms such as "dunk", "free throw" and "rebound".

Quick tip

Remember: RBI (Run Batted In), home run, strikeout, pitcher, diamond, World Series = baseball; grand slam in baseball = home run with bases loaded (4 RBIs).
