Detailed Solution
The Shandur Polo Ground, at the Shandur Pass in the Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region of Pakistan, is considered the world's highest polo ground.
About Shandur:
- It is located at a height of about 3,700 metres (about 12,200 feet) above sea level.
- It lies between the Chitral district (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and the Ghizer district (Gilgit-Baltistan).
- It is called the "Roof of the World" polo ground.
The Shandur Polo Festival is held every year in July. The main match is played between the teams of Chitral and Gilgit.
The polo played here is a traditional "free-style" form, with few rules and no umpire in the traditional style.
The ground was set up in 1936 by a British political agent, Major Evelyn Hey Cobb, who liked to play polo under the moonlight; hence it was also called "Mas Junali" ("moon ground").
About polo:
- It is one of the oldest team sports in the world, believed to have originated in ancient Persia (Iran).
- It is played on horseback, with players using long-handled mallets to hit a ball into the opponent's goal.
The modern game was developed in Manipur, India. British tea planters and army officers learned it from the Manipuris in the 19th century.
The "Silchar Polo Club", founded in 1859 in Assam, is considered the first modern polo club in the world.
The "Calcutta Polo Club" (1862) is the oldest polo club still in existence.
The Imphal Polo Ground (Mapal Kangjeibung) in Manipur is considered one of the oldest polo grounds in the world.
Manipuri polo is called "Sagol Kangjei", played on Manipuri ponies.
Polo is the "game of kings" and the "sport of kings".
Polo in India:
- The Indian Polo Association (1892) is the governing body.
- The 61st Cavalry regiment of the Indian Army is famous for its polo team; it is one of the last horse-mounted cavalry regiments in the world.
- Polo is also played in Ladakh, Rajasthan and Delhi.
Why not the other options?
- ✗Gilgit has a well-known polo ground, but it is lower than Shandur.
- ✗Darjeeling is not known for a high-altitude polo ground.
- ✗Good to know
- ✗Leh, Ladakh, has polo grounds, but they are lower than Shandur.
Quick tip
Remember: highest polo ground = Shandur, Pakistan (about 3,700 m; Shandur Festival every July, Chitral vs Gilgit); modern polo = from Manipur ("Sagol Kangjei"); Silchar Polo Club = 1859, first modern club.
