Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Archery

Detailed Solution

Archery ("dha" in Dzongkha) has been the national sport of Bhutan since 1971, the year Bhutan joined the United Nations.

About archery in Bhutan:

  • It is deeply rooted in Bhutanese culture, history and religion, and is played at almost every festival and celebration.
  • Traditional archery uses bows made of bamboo and arrows of bamboo or reed.
  • Modern compound bows made of carbon fibre and aluminium are now also widely used in local competitions.
  • Targets are small (about 30 cm wide and 1 metre tall) and are placed about 140 metres apart, much farther than the Olympic distance of 70 metres.
  • Teams shoot at targets at both ends of the field.
  • Matches are lively social events: teammates sing, dance and shout encouragement when an archer hits the target, and taunt the opponents to put them off.
  • Women ("dancers") sing and dance near the field to cheer their teams.
  • Matches can last for a whole day or more, and are accompanied by food and drink.

Archery in the Olympics:

  • Bhutan has sent archers to every Summer Olympics since 1984 (Los Angeles), its first Olympics.
  • Bhutan's first Olympic athletes were archers.

Other traditional sports of Bhutan:

  • "Khuru": a darts game played with heavy wooden darts thrown at a target about 20 metres away.
  • "Degor": a game of throwing flat stones at a target, similar to shot put or quoits.
  • "Sogshing Lugdo": stone throwing.

National sports of some other countries:

  • Bangladesh: Kabaddi.
  • Pakistan: Field hockey (traditionally regarded as the national game).
  • Nepal: Volleyball (declared in 2017).
  • Afghanistan: Buzkashi (a game played on horseback).
  • Canada: Ice hockey (winter) and lacrosse (summer).
  • Japan: Sumo wrestling.
  • India has no officially declared national sport; hockey is popularly regarded as such.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Football is popular in Bhutan but is not the national sport.
  • ✗Polo is famous in Manipur and Pakistan's northern areas.
  • ✗Wrestling is a traditional sport in many countries, but not Bhutan's national sport.

Quick tip

Remember: Bhutan national sport = Archery (since 1971; targets about 140 m apart; at every Olympics since 1984); Bangladesh = Kabaddi; Afghanistan = Buzkashi; Japan = Sumo.
