Answer: Option B — 1992
Detailed Solution
Pakistan won its first (and so far only) ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 1992, held in Australia and New Zealand.
About the 1992 World Cup:
- It was the fifth Cricket World Cup.
- It was the first World Cup to use coloured clothing, a white ball, black sight screens and day-night matches under floodlights.
- It was the first in which South Africa took part, after the end of its sporting isolation caused by apartheid.
- Nine teams played in a single round-robin format, followed by semi-finals and a final.
Pakistan, led by Imran Khan, began poorly and was nearly knocked out, but won its last few group matches to reach the semi-finals. Imran Khan famously told his team to "fight like cornered tigers".
In the semi-final, Pakistan beat New Zealand; the young Inzamam-ul-Haq played a match-winning innings.
In the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 25 March 1992, Pakistan beat England by 22 runs.
Wasim Akram was named Player of the Match in the final, and Martin Crowe of New Zealand was the Player of the Tournament.
Imran Khan later became the Prime Minister of Pakistan (2018-2022).
The "rain rule" controversy: South Africa's semi-final against England ended with an impossible target of 22 runs off 1 ball after a rain delay, leading to the later adoption of the Duckworth-Lewis method.
Men's Cricket World Cup winners:
- 1975 and 1979: West Indies (Clive Lloyd).
- 1983: India (Kapil Dev), beating West Indies at Lord's.
- 1987: Australia (first World Cup held outside England, in India and Pakistan).
- 1992: Pakistan.
- 1996: Sri Lanka (Arjuna Ranatunga).
- 1999, 2003, 2007: Australia.
2011: India (M. S. Dhoni), at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
2015: Australia.
2019: England (on boundary count after a tied final and Super Over).
2023: Australia (beat India in the final at Ahmedabad); Australia has won six titles, the most.
Pakistan's other ICC titles:
- ICC World Twenty20 (2009), under Younis Khan.
- ICC Champions Trophy (2017), beating India in the final at The Oval.
Why not the other options?
- ✗1987 was won by Australia.
- ✗1996 was won by Sri Lanka.
- ✗1999 was won by Australia, beating Pakistan in the final.
Quick tip
Remember: Pakistan's only ODI World Cup = 1992 (Imran Khan; final at Melbourne vs England; "cornered tigers"; first World Cup with coloured clothing); India = 1983 and 2011; Australia = 6 titles; Sri Lanka = 1996.
