What is the standard height of the volleyball net from the ground for men's matches?

Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option A — 2.43 metres

Detailed Solution

In indoor volleyball, the height of the net for men's matches is 2.43 m (about 7 feet 11 5/8 inches), measured at the centre of the court from the ground to the top of the net. For women's matches, the net is 2.24 m high.

Other volleyball measurements (FIVB rules):

  • The court is 18 m long and 9 m wide, divided into two halves of 9 m x 9 m by the centre line.
  • The net is 1 m wide (vertically) and 9.5 to 10 m long.
  • An attack line is drawn 3 m from the centre line on each side, separating the front zone from the back zone.

Two antennas, each 1.80 m long, are fixed on the net above the sidelines. They mark the side limits of the crossing space; a ball touching an antenna is "out".

The ball has a circumference of 65-67 cm and weighs 260-280 g.

Basic rules:

  • Each team has 6 players on the court.
  • A team may touch the ball up to 3 times before sending it over the net (the block does not count as a touch).

Matches are played as best of five sets. The first four sets are played to 25 points, and the deciding fifth set is played to 15 points, always with a two-point lead.

A specialist defensive player called the "libero" wears a different coloured shirt and can only play in the back row.

Volleyball was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in the USA and became an Olympic sport in 1964.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗2.24 metres is the height of the women's volleyball net.
  • ✗1.55 metres is the height of the badminton net at the posts.
  • ✗3.05 metres is the height of the basketball ring.

Quick tip

Remember: Volleyball net = 2.43 m (men), 2.24 m (women); court = 18 m x 9 m; attack line = 3 m; 6 players; sets of 25, fifth set to 15.
