Answer (Detailed Solution Below)View answer ▾Hide ▴
Answer: Option C — 2011
Detailed Solution
India's first Formula One race, the Indian Grand Prix, was held on 30 October 2011 at the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, near Delhi.
Key facts about the Indian Grand Prix:
The race was won by Sebastian Vettel of Germany, driving for Red Bull Racing. Vettel also won the next two editions, in 2012 and 2013, so he won every Indian Grand Prix ever held.
The Buddh International Circuit was designed by the German architect Hermann Tilke and built by the Jaypee Group. The track is about 5.14 km long.
India's Narain Karthikeyan raced for the HRT team in the first Indian Grand Prix, and Karun Chandhok was also involved in F1 at the time.
The race was held only three times (2011, 2012 and 2013). It was then dropped from the F1 calendar because of disputes over taxes, the classification of F1 as entertainment rather than sport, and financial issues.
Indian drivers in Formula One:
- Narain Karthikeyan (Tamil Nadu) became the first Indian Formula One driver in 2005, racing for the Jordan team.
- Karun Chandhok became the second Indian F1 driver in 2010.
- Force India was an Indian-owned F1 team (2008-2018), owned by Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy.
Formula One basics:
- The F1 World Championship began in 1950 and is governed by the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile), based in Paris.
- Flags are used to communicate with drivers; for example, a yellow flag means danger and a chequered flag ends the race.
Why not the other options?
- ✗2008 is when the Force India team entered F1.
- ✗2013 was the last Indian Grand Prix.
- ✗2015 had no Indian Grand Prix.
Quick tip
Remember: First Indian Grand Prix = 30 October 2011, Buddh International Circuit (Greater Noida), won by Sebastian Vettel; held only 2011-2013; first Indian F1 driver = Narain Karthikeyan (2005).
