Answer: Option B — Mumbai
Detailed Solution
Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is by far the most successful team in the history of the Ranji Trophy. It has won the title 42 times, most recently in the 2023-24 season, when it defeated Vidarbha in the final.
About the Ranji Trophy:
It is India's premier domestic first-class cricket championship, played between teams representing states and some other cricketing associations. It is organised by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India).
It began in the 1934-35 season. The first title was won by Bombay, who defeated Northern India in the final.
It is named after Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji (1872-1933), the Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, who played Test cricket for England and is often called the "father of Indian cricket". The trophy was donated by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala.
Mumbai's record:
- Mumbai won 15 consecutive titles from 1958-59 to 1972-73, a record in domestic cricket.
- Famous players who came through Mumbai's domestic cricket include Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Dilip Vengsarkar.
Other successful teams:
- Karnataka (formerly Mysore) has won the title 8 times.
- Delhi has won 7 times.
- Vidarbha won its first titles in 2017-18 and 2018-19, and again in 2024-25.
- Madhya Pradesh won its first title in 2021-22.
- Related tournaments include the Irani Cup (Ranji champions vs Rest of India), the Duleep Trophy (zonal teams), the Vijay Hazare Trophy (one-day) and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20).
Why not the other options?
- ✗Karnataka is the second most successful team, with 8 titles.
- ✗Delhi has 7 titles.
- ✗Vidarbha is a recent champion with three titles.
Quick tip
Remember: Ranji Trophy = since 1934-35, named after Ranjitsinhji; Mumbai = most titles (42), including 15 in a row (1958-59 to 1972-73).
