Who became the first Indian man to reach the final of the BWF World Badminton Championships?

Answer View answer ā–¾

Answer: Option D — Kidambi Srikanth

Detailed Solution

At the 2021 BWF World Championships, held in December 2021 in Huelva, Spain, Kidambi Srikanth became the first Indian man to reach the final of the men's singles event. He lost the final to Loh Kean Yew of Singapore and won the silver medal, the best result by an Indian man at the championships.

More about Kidambi Srikanth:

  • He was born on 7 February 1993 in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, and trained at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.
  • In 2014, he won the China Open Super Series Premier, beating the legendary Lin Dan in the final.
  • In 2017, he won four Super Series titles in one year (Indonesia, Australia, Denmark and French Open), equalling a record held by a few players.

In April 2018, he became the world number one in men's singles, the first Indian man to do so in the BWF ranking era. (Prakash Padukone had been top-ranked in the 1980s under the old system.)

He was part of the Indian team that won the Thomas Cup in 2022.

He received the Arjuna Award (2015) and the Padma Shri (2018).

Indian medallists at the BWF World Championships:

  • Prakash Padukone: bronze (1983), India's first medal at the event.
  • V. Sindhu: gold (2019), the first Indian World Champion; she has five World Championship medals.
  • Saina Nehwal: silver (2015) and bronze (2017).
  • Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa: bronze in women's doubles (2011).
  • Lakshya Sen: bronze (2021).
  • Sai Praneeth: bronze (2019).
  • S. Prannoy: bronze (2023).
  • Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty: bronze in men's doubles (2022 and 2025).

Why not the other options?

  • āœ—Prakash Padukone won bronze in 1983 but did not reach the final.
  • āœ—Lakshya Sen won bronze in 2021, losing to Srikanth in the semi-final.
  • āœ—S. Prannoy won bronze in 2023.

Quick tip

Remember: First Indian man in a BWF World Championships final = Kidambi Srikanth (silver, 2021, Huelva); first Indian World Champion = P. V. Sindhu (2019); first Indian medal = Prakash Padukone (1983).
