Answer View answer ▾

Answer: Option D — Football

Detailed Solution

Subimal "Chuni" Goswami (1938-2020) was one of India's greatest footballers. He captained the Indian football team that won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, India's second (and last) Asian Games football gold, after 1951.

Chuni Goswami's football career:

He was born on 15 January 1938 in Kishoreganj (now in Bangladesh) and grew up in Kolkata.

He played his entire club career for Mohun Bagan, from 1954 to 1968, and is regarded as one of the club's greatest legends. He was known for his dribbling skills and graceful style as a forward.

He played for India in about 50 international matches and scored several goals.

Under his captaincy, India also won silver at the 1964 AFC Asian Cup and played in the Merdeka Cup.

He is said to have received an offer to play for the English club Tottenham Hotspur, which he declined.

Multi-sport talent:

Chuni Goswami was also a first-class cricketer. He played in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal and captained the team, leading it to the final in the 1971-72 season. This makes him one of the few Indians to represent the country and state at a high level in two sports.

Honours:

  • Arjuna Award (1963).
  • Padma Shri (1983).
  • He was later the Sheriff of Kolkata (2005).

Other legendary Indian footballers of that era:

  • K. Banerjee: the first footballer to receive the Arjuna Award (1961).
  • Tulsidas Balaram: a member of the 1962 Asian Games team.
  • Syed Abdul Rahim: the coach of the Indian team that won the Asian Games golds in 1951 and 1962.

Why not the other options?

  • ✗Hockey legends include Dhyan Chand and Balbir Singh Sr.
  • ✗Tennis legends include Ramanathan Krishnan and Vijay Amritraj.

Athletics legends include Milkha Singh and P. T. Usha.
